Garageband Interview

Hello Mr.Beko, you‘re the choir master but who started it?
The group was formed by a mister Lungisani Langa in 1991 and it is a combination of different groups of people from the community, who have come together to form one strong team. And still growing.

What is it about?
It’s about giving talented youth a platform and an opportunity to sing, play instruments and dance. In churches, graduations, birthday parties, weddings and sometimes funerals.

How is the project funded?
We sometimes charge for our performances and from donations.

Are you receiving any funding from the government?
At the moment no, however we did once receive 2 speakers from the local government.

How often do you rehearse?
We rehearse everyday – 2 hours per day Monday to Friday.

Have you ever shared a stage with anyone famous?
Yes, with a member of a famous group known as “joyous celebrations”

What sort of challenges do you come across as a group?
Some of our members are still young and sometimes it is challenging having to deal with childish behaviour. Its not easy maintaining discipline and punctuality. As a group we collectively deal with the financial problems regarding instruments, transport, uniforms and of course there is violence in our community that affect us all.

What are the plans for the future?
We aim for success in the music industry, either as a group or perhaps some individuals. Performing on national television and just helping more and more young people to develope as artists.
