Sasha Lee Davids
words by An-Lizé Davids
There’s a saying that goes “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”. But we’ve experienced that the way to Man’s heart is through Music.
We are the Davids family – Dad, Mom, 10 children, 1 son-in-law & 2 grandchildren… & yes you read correctly, we are 10 children, 8 girls and 2 boys! We live in a town about 45 minutes out of Cape Town called Atlantis and most times it’s as lost as its mythical counterpart. Dad & Mom have always had a vision of a safer, healthier and hopeful community, started a church and made a difference the old fashioned way. This haven is where we learnt so many of life’s lessons, discovered passion & developed our talents. Christ became our wonder, music became our tool, and that is our cure for everything. To us it’s as potent as a mother’s kiss is to a toddler.
As with everything in life, with the good comes the bad and we are no exception to the rule. We’ve been lied to, ridiculed, cheated, forgotten, etc, etc, but decided to focus on the positive. We are no saints, but we believe that we live with one, our mom. As a child of Apartheid, she vowed to be that, which she lacked when growing up. She’s inspired us to always see the good in people regardless whether they hurt us before, to always walk the extra mile with anyone in need. We might not be able to save the whole world but we can certainly try to change it, starting with one person at a time. Did we see miracles! We’ve witnessed young and old turn away from drugs and alcohol, murderers and thieves sustain a better life, broken homes, marriages, people, made whole again.
This attitude and view towards life not only touched other people’s lives but spilled over into our own. A much unexpected blessing came our family’s way. The SA IDOL of 2009, Sasha-Lee Davids, happens to be our sister. It turned out to be the most controversial Idols season world wide but this 19 year old stunned people with her strength and dignity with which she handled the fiasco. She always answers the same when asked about how she managed, and that would be her faith, her parents and her family. This youngster’s life motto rings true, SEE ME RISE!
You may not remember Rev John & Sally Davids, Sasha-Lee or any of our names, but we hope that you will remember our story, the people whose lives were touched. It did not make world news, but it made a world of difference to them. That is our life mission, that is our legacy and is anyone’s who wants to make the effort and take the time to try.
